The Changing Logo Design: How to Create a Ranch Logo:

Back in 2003, it was decided that a “ Family Ranch Website” was needed. So we set out to create one. The THOMAS Ranch had just turned 101 years old and it was that fact which became our deciding factor on creating one (a website). Once our family website was formed it was apparent that we didn’t have a logo.

The initial website was basked in “Black and Blue” the Original Logo was designed online, using a website that customizes the words you put into the program it uses. It was a very nice looking Banner, which we used as our logo and worked with the Original site. We then added a free layout banner background design; A Cowboy Riding his Horse into the sunset. It did however lack in “Personal-ism,” meaning it just wasn’t “Our Ranch” logo.

Once our site started changing (do to the fact that it got so large) and the color scheme of blue left, being replaced with Orange, due to all the men in the family’s fondness for that color. Then an actual logo demand or desire was initiated/introduced. We needed to create a customized logo.

It took us several tries to actually find a logo that we liked, that was completely us. Using an Angus Bull, to represent the type of cattle that we raise, and an Orange color Scheme we created our first “Real Ranch Logo.” We decided that this was a good looking logo and started using it, on our website. This logo got its point across to everyone that we were a cattle ranch, and that we have been established since 1902, and we were located in Bisbee Arizona. Something still stood out to us about this logo and we couldn’t nail it down. What exactly was wrong with it? It took us approximately 6 months before we could finally answer that question; in the mean time we used this logo on our website.

After the first six months of using the first “Real Ranch Logo” it was then that we realized that our first version of this logo looked too two dimensional. We then started added shading to it, creating a 3-D effect. We also increased the size of the Bull to better match, and offset, the logo size. Dimensionally this was the correct move; it also made it more professional looking. We were very happy with this design and layout. This gave us the professionalism, the color scheme that we were looking for, and it was proportionately correct. What more could a simple family like ours ask for? Well we’ll tell ya!

Our family is very much into fishing and we decided to put a largemouth bass jumping from the water, to use on our fishing section of the website. This turned out to be an excellent logo. We used it on every single page that we wrote about fishing. Which if you have been on our site for anytime now you’ll know there are quite a few of them. We loved the water that you can see the Bass jumping out of, which added an additional layer of color.

Our website experimented with several different backgrounds, to include this one, which represented our standardized “Angus Logo.” This one was never used, but we thought it looked pretty good. Basically we took six of our logos and placed it on a separate working sheet, made them much lighter and then placed one normal color with normal lighting on the center of the page. I personally like how it turned out, it just didn’t work for what we were looking for, at that time. Something was still wrong that we couldn’t put our finger on. What was wrong exactly? We couldn’t nail it down at this point.

It wasn’t until 2009 when we made another discovery, an almost earth shattering discovery. We realized that we had been squishing the name THOMAS in our previous logos. This had to change! We decided that a newly created logo would have to be c-thru, designed using a non white background, and of much higher quality. During the creation of this new logo is when we removed the Angus Bull. Bringing out the name THOMAS we believed definitely improved this logo’s design and presentation. While it started off trying to duplicate the “Angus Bull Logo” it was then that the logo took on an “Indian Eagle” style, design to it. We believe it helps also display the fact that we have been around since the Cowboys and Indian era. This should represent to the world that we are from Cochise County which was named after the famous Apache, Indian, Cochise, who was from the Chiricahua tribe.

Once the new logo was completed we decided to experiment and recreate the background pages using the new logo. We turned the new logo at a 45° angle, lightened it, and covered the page with them diagonally, at a much smaller size. We then placed the newest finished logo dead-center. We ended up using this for internal paperwork, documentation. We did not use this one for our website background, 'nor for general distribution, but we still may, the jury is still out on this one. Anyways, this is how it turned out.

And that ladies and gentlemen is how we ended up with our current logo. I hope that you enjoyed reading about how we ended up with our design and we hope that you like it as much as we do.
